Come Blow
Your Horn

Young Israel teaches families the basics
of shofar blowing and other mitzvot.

A

s anyone who has
ever tried it can
testify, blowing a
shofar is about as
easy as, say, nuclear physics.
It isn't just a matter of
putting your lips to the
horn. You have to have them
in exactly the right place,
you need to have a lot of
energy and breath and you
have to know the exact way
in which to blow.
Otherwise, you're likely to
produce nothing more than
a painful squeak that will
leave your family and neigh-
bors begging for earplugs.
Enter Young Israel of
Southfield.
In preparation for the
High Holy Days, YI-
Southfield held a Tekiat
Shofar Workshop where
families learned all about the
shofar and how to play it.
"The idea for the program
came from the National
Council of Young Israel in
New York," said Rabbi
Yechiel Morris. "We were
already planning this year to
have a monthly Mitzvah
Class for our children and
their parents, and this was a
great way to get started."
Fifteen children, along
with their parents, were
enrolled in the three-part
seminar, which featured a
"talent show" at the end,
where all children had an
opportunity to come blow
their horn in front of the
rest of the class.
In addition to Rabbi
Morris, who taught students
the laws of the shofar, Dr.
Jay Novetsky, who blows

shofar for Young Israel on
Rosh Hashanah, taught the
children the techniques of
working with the shofar to
produce that haunting,

beautiful sound.
Future courses in the
Mitzvah Class include tefill-
in, challah baking, the
mezuzah and tzitzit. ❑
