ove of Israel propelled flutist
Wendy Eisler-Kashy from San
Francisco to K'far Saba, a
small town north of Tel Aviv.
And the flavor of her adopted
country permeates the recital she
will present Sunday, Sept. 21, at
Temple Israel's Schaller Chapel
Chamber Series.
"I went to Israel because I'm a
Zionist, because I wanted to live
in the Jewish State," says Eisler-
Kashy, who made aliyah in 1975.
"I came from a very assimilat-
ed background; I didn't have any
Jewish education. But as I grew
up, I started to feel the draw of
Israel."
Eisler-Kashy studied with
mega-flutist James Galway and
earned a master's degree in music
from the Manhattan School of
Music. She has been principal
flutist in the Israel Philharmonic
and makes frequent solo and
chamber appearances both with-
in the country and abroad.
Along with Virginia-born
pianist Allan Sternfield and
soprano Amalia Ishak, she
formed the Jerusalem Lyric Trio,
which has performed for audiences
from Italy to Casablanca to St.
Petersburg. The trio recently
released a CD, If 1- Forget Thee, 0

ance, Sternfield and Eisler-Kashy

"We have some outstanding musi

what you don't hear about is the
creativity that is still going on,"
Eisler-Kashy says. "And I'm proud

"fast life" of drugs, sex and petty crime.
Reed wrote the film with director
Catherine Hardwicke. It is somewhat
autobiographical — although Reed has
matured quickly from her "wild days."
Thirteen has received good-to-great
reviews, but it might be best to use
this fairly graphic film as a discussion
tool between parents and teenagers —
rather than just sending teens off to
see it on their own.
In a profile in Philadelphia's Jewish
Exponent, Hardwicke noted that both
Reed and co-star Evan Rachel Wood, 15,
are Jewish. Wood has been a regular on
TV's The Profiler and Once and Again.
