Speaker Lauded
There is a tzadile(righteous person)
among us. His name is Nolan Finley
and he is editorial page editor of the
Detroit News. On the eve of our son's
bar mitzvah, Finley showed him what
it meant to be a man.
Addressing a large group at the
Jewish Community Center in West
Bloomfield last week, Finley spoke
with the same courage and conviction
that fire his bold editorials. A non-
Jew, Finley ardently supports Israel's
democratic sovereignty, even if it
means incurring a backlash of enmity
from metro Detroit's large Arab com-
munity.
One can only imagine the cost of
Finley's bravery and candor to his per-
sonal/professional life. That lesson of
speaking the truth, even if it may not
be the popular or politically correct
message of the day, is the most power-
ful lesson of character and integrity
we, as parents, want to impress upon
our children.
Finley warned of doom for Israel if
she relents to anti-Semitic world pres-
sure and does not become more "bru-
tal" in crushing Palestinian Authority
President Yasser Arafat and the terror
machine that seeks her destruction,
just as America unleashes shock and
awe to defeat those who threaten our
nation.
Because the world rewards these
fanatic killers with the prospect of no-
strings-attached statehood, Finley con-
tends it emboldens them to continue
their savagery and sends a message
that Jewish blood is cheap.
Israel fatally miscalcuated the
Palestinian propaganda war and must
assail vacuum-packed media lies. The
P.A. has brilliantly marketed its terror-
embracing populace as prefabricated
"victims" of Israeli aggression, Finley
said. And because the world loves an
underdog, the P.A. is winning over the
hearts and minds of people every-
where. He added that Palestinian
"spin" has spun out of control, espe-
cially on American campuses, largely
because Jewish leaders have become
too complacent for fear of offending
anyone.
We cannot afford to be silent.
Nothing less than the future of our
people is at stake. Thank you, Nolan
Finley, for exemplifying the virtues of
emmis (truth). "Justice, justice shalt
thou pursue."

My name is Katie Rosen.
If you're looking for me, I'm
usually at practice. I'm on the
robotics team, the volleyball and
tennis teams, and I'm the secretary
of Student Government. Before
JAMD, I had never been to a
Jewish day school. Once, I went to
a retreat and met some great kids
from the Jewish Academy. They
participated in every aspect of the
retreat--the study groups, services,
and d' var torahs. I wanted to know
what they knew and do what they
could do. Since coming to JAMD,
I've read Torah at my temple, Kol
Ami, become more involved in
BBYO and NCSY, and met kids of
all different backgrounds: Reform,
Orthodox, Conservative, and
unaffiliated; Ashkenazi and
Sephardi; Israeli and Russian. In
some places in the world, religion
splits people apart, but at JAMD it's
Judaism that brings all of us
together.
