Harvard and Yale universi-
ties, Hebrew Union College, the
British Museum, the Library of
Congress — and, now, the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit.
In June, Federation's Alliance for
Jewish Education was given a hand-
made Tree of Life shtender (book-
stand), designed by Moss and Noah
Greenberg, an Israeli wood artist.
A gift from Bill and Audrey Farber
of Franklin at the suggestion of Allan
Gelfond, Federation's senior financial
resource development officer, the
work is more than a piece of furni-
ture.
It's an imposing sculpture of highly
polished walnut, covered with intri-
cate carvings and filled with secret
compartments. Hidden inside the
shtender are all the items needed to
celebrate Shabbat and the major
(Sam, Sammy, Dad and Ziddie)
