injected into this conference. I know
the people who are running it, and
this is certainly not their intent."
Rep. Levin emphasized that the
focus of the forum "will be, and
should be, on the economic relation-
ships."
"The larger issues of security and
peace will not be center stage. I
know Secretary of State [Colin]
Powell will speak, and he may cover
that," he said.
Attorney
Michael Traison,
president oPthe
American Israel
Chamber of
Economic
Development
and a member of
the Governor's
Bilateral Trade
Traison
Commission on
Michigan and
Israel, will not be
attending the
forum, but said he will look with
interest at how it all works out.
"I had been contacted to be an
underwriter of the conference," said
Traison, a senior principal partner at
the Detroit-based law firm Miller,
Canfield, Paddock and Stone. "They
represented it to me as a Middle
Eastern business conference. I need-
ed to know if Israel would be includ-
ed, but it's not.
"I would have preferred to see
Israel involved, but going back many
years --- in this community, too, not
just in the Middle East — Arabs
have had difficulty involving them-
selves with Israel."
However, Traison said the event
"should be a good program."
The forum is an important step in
the maturing of the Arab-American
community, Traison said.
"It's hard to find other ethnic
communities that are as well organ-
ized as the Jewish community. Every
aspect of communal life, we're the
exemplar. We've grown used to the
fact.
"The Arabs haven't been able to
pull off anything like this. But the
times are changing," he said.
