Williamsburg, Va. He placed in the
top 20 in the 54-hole event that fea-
tured 85 of the best 11-year-olds in
the world.
In the Optimist International Junior
Golf Championship, held in Palm
Beach Gardens, Fla., Felsenfeld shot
82-84-74 to place in the top third of a
field of 78 players.
In addition to golf, which he often
plays with his parents, Brenda and
Bob, Matthew also plays travel hockey
and baseball. His older brother Josh is
on the varsity golf team at West
Bloomfield High. His sister Elyssa
prefers tennis.
The youngest Felsenfeld brother,
Zack, 3, is learning toplay golf and
recently won a one-hole tournament
at Tarn O'Shanter Country Club.

Senior inside linebacker Ben Porath is
a third-year starter at Ann Arbor
Pioneer. He earned All-League and sec-
ond team All-Area honors last season.
Senior Jason Gisler starts at free
safety for Walled Lake Western. Other
Jewish participants in Western's pro-
gram include quarterbacks coach Mike
Weiskopf, junior varsity cornerback
Paul Shotkin and freshman team
offensive lineman Andy Goodman.
Country Day's squad features sen-
ior starting center Jordan Sasson and
junior starting placekicker David
Litwin, along with junior two-way
lineman Eric Greenberg.
Midfielder Jordan Gruber began
his junior soccer season at Michigan
State with a game-winning goal. The
Birmingham Groves grad scored with
less than four minutes remaining to
lead the Spartans past Xavier, 1-0, in
the season opener.
Second-year varsity player Rachel
Meerkov, a junior, has earned a
starting guard spot on Ann Arbor
Huron's basketball team.
Matthew Felsenfeld, 11, played in the
Meijer Junior Players Golf Tour this
summer, in the 10-12-year-old division.
The West Bloomfield resident scored
two victories, added a pair of third-place
finishes and ended up top four in the
overall standings. In June, he qualified
for two World Junior Championship
events by winning his age group with a
77 for 18 holes at each qualifier.
For the fourth consecutive year,
Matthew and his mom, Brenda, who
caddies for him, returned to the U.S.
