Gets Grants

T

he Jewish Ensemble
Theatre will be able to
bring quality drama to
more young people
thanks to two new grants, said pub-
licity director Sue Terebello.
A grant from the Jewish Women's
Foundation of Metropolitan Detroit
will enable the Dorfman Family
Foundation Youth Theatre-JET YES
to add a third original play to its
repertoire of touring productions for
school and community groups.
A second grant from Variety, the
Children's Charity, will fund per-
formances of JET YES plays at eight
Detroit schools that were not previ-
ously served by the program.
The new show, Mean Girls, by
Maddee Sommers, is designed to
illustrate the often-hurtful ways that
girls treat one another. Its target
audience is fourth- through ninth-
0 grade girls.

"The JWF has had the foresight to
confront the issue on an emotional
level and create an eye-opening
experience," Terebello said.
Mean Girls is expected to be ready
for school performances in the
spring.
It costs $599 to present a JET
YES ensemble production in a
school, for audiences up to 500 per-
sons. More than 40,000 children
saw a JET YES school performance
last year.
The second grant, from Variety,
the Children's Charity, will enable
students at the eight Detroit schools
to see I Was Just Kidding, designed
for elementary-school students, or
Word, for middle and high school
students. Both shows deal with con-
flicts between young people, and
each performance includes interac-
tive sessions at which the audience
gets a chance to talk about the
issues raised by the play.
