JACOB got its start in 2001 between Temple Israel and the Chaldean Americans Reaching & Encouraging (CARE). This summer, JACOB brought Jewish and Chaldean youth together for their third annual rebuilding of Detroit homes project. In 2002, Temple Israel and the Chaldean Iraqi American Association of Michigan (CIAAM), which owns Shenandoah Country Club, held din- ner and conversation events at the temple and the country club to get to know one another. The Sept. 8 golf outing was cospon- sored by Temple Israel, CIAAM and St. Thomas Chaldean Church. Hitting the fairways at Shenandoah Country Club on Walnut Lake Road, golfers raised $5,000 for the JACOB youth programs sponsored by Temple Israel and St. Thomas Chaldean Church. The goal of JACOB (Jewish and Chaldean Opportunity Builders) is to bring Jewish and Chaldean youth together in a variety of settings to learn about their similar- ities and dispel their stereotypes. Each golf team con- sisted of two Jews and two Chaldeans.
