"The main thing was trying to bring a community event to town," said Plotnik, who was delighted to look up Old North Woodward Avenue to see "hundreds of people walking down the hill [to the mar- ket] — It looked like Chicago or New York." Plotnik is delighted the event is attracting so many residents to Birmingham's Gallery District, north of Maple Road. Lori Karbal has a store a few doors south of the mar- ket. On Sept. 7, Plotnik asked Karbal if she could use the store's lavatory "and the people just followed us into the building." Lori Karbal EtAl sells cos- metics, bath products, active wear, candles and rrieri's prod- ucts, and is normally open from 1-5 p.m. on Sunday. Karbal stayed open through- out the :morning Sept. after the impromptu opening, "and I did an incredible amount of business." Last Sunday, Karbal opened her store at 10 a.m. ❑ The Birmingham Farmers' Market is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Sunday through Oct. 26.
