Thursday and Saturday After 10:00 p.m. r s zANNE CHESSLER peciai to the Jewish News American-made docu- xnentary film that has been viewed around Israel is coming to the Detroit Film Theatre. Love and. Diane, which tells the story of an impoverished New York family fighting drug addiction and HIV, will be shown Sept. 19-21. "I think this film has had so much attention in Israel because the people there are really seeing poverty for the first time," says filmmaker Jennifer Dworkin, who introduced this as her first work at the Jerusalem Film Festival. "I also think that part of being Jewish is having a concern for social issues." Dworkin, winner of a $20,000 Truer Than Fiction Award at the 2003 Independent Spirit Awards as well as international prizes, came upon the family while doing volunteer teaching at a homeless shelter. Her filming began as a video project with young people interested in photography before she learned that cinema funding was available and launched a larger venture. "I wanted to explain life that might be quite alien to viewers says Dwor who learne having children gave meaning to their lives." Dworldn's film, made with the drama of fiction, tells the story of Diane Hazzard, a former crack addict, and her daughter, Love Hinson, who is FIIV-positive. The two are coping with the birth of Hinson's son, Donyeah, also HIV- positive, and the rigors of the social services system. Since the movie was made, Dworkin has become closer to her subjects. Besides traveling with them to speaking engagements, she has kept Donyeah in her apartment while his mother received medical treatment. Dworkin, on her way to a doc- toral degree in philosophy before entering the world of cinema, is working on a new film project, a series on the essence of great teaching. "I have sold the television rights to Love and Diane," Dworkin says. "I used festival prize money to buy computers for everyone in the Hazzard family." r MI UM I ALL SANDWICHES II BUY ONE ENTREE 1 1 GET SECOND ENTREE I $11.95 50% OFF CARRY-OUT ONLY Expires 9/30/03 1 I ■ • MI NM MIN INN NM MI MINI a= L DINE-IN Of . equal or lesser value) _E au 9/30/ .02.
