Event planner and public relations
executive Stephanie Jacobson of
Birmingham saw the idea in action
in Santa Monica several years ago:
combine live music, prepared-food
booths and a farmers' market to
draw a crowd. "I'm originally from
Chicago," said Jacobson, "and I
carve those urban experiences."
With the help of friend Julie

Plotnik, someone with lots of con-
tacts as a candidate for Birmingham
City Commission, Jacobson did the
planning, fund-raising and got the
requisite approvals from the city and
its Principal Shopping District.
And, in its first two Sundays in
operation, their new
Birmingham Farmers'
Market has been suc-
cessful beyond
Jacobson's dreams.
