CELEBRATION
CONCERT

she "couldn't think of a
better way to spend a
Sunday." Sarah Deitch of
West Bloomfield, in her
fifth year, helped serve
lunch to the athletes.
Robert Basch of West
Bloomfield manned the
Nerf football throw com-
petition.
Other field events
were basketball hot shot,
tennis ball throw, soccer
goal kick, in-line hockey
shoot-out and running
an obstacle course.
Track events were walking, running
and relay races. There were special
races for those using walkers and
wheelchairs, adult free-style swim-
ming races and non-swimmer water

take several time-outs.
Detroit Middle Blocker Hannah
Miller was clearly the best player in
the tournament with her blocking,
pin-point serves and hitting. Setters
Lindsey Scher and Abby Siegel guid-
ed the team with extraordinary ball
control.
Middle blocker Lauren Schwartz
used finesse and intelligence to con-
fuse the opposition. Outside hitter
Lauren Elkus was nearly flawless.
Weakside hitter and back row
attacker Carly Wayne used her power
to advantage and was strong with her
serves. Lisa Goode's presence at the
net altered the opponents' attack.
Tedi Milgrom, coming off a battle
with the flu, showed tremendous
grit. Joey Herman was the spark
plug, settling the team. Her back row
passing was one of the reasons
Detroit defeated Palisades.

events. Everyone received ribbons
and a replica of an Olympic gold
medal.
Among the athletes were Robert
Howard, Robert Werney, Sam Nelson,
Debra Howard, Erika Zelman, Rachel
Fallert, Danny Friedman and Jacob
Gross.
Fame Games sponsors were the
Jewish Community Center of
Metropolitan Detroit, the Michigan
Jewish Sports Foundation, Northwest
Child Rescue Women, West
Bloomfield Parts & Recreation
Department and West Bloomfield
School District Community
Education.
Rabbi Elliot Pachter of
Congregation B'nai Moshe delivered
the invocation. Marci Shulman of
Bloomfield Hills sang the U.S. and
Israeli national anthems, accompanied
by Marlene Nessel of Farmington
Hills.
Dr. Stuart Kirschenbaum, president
of the Michigan Jewish Sports
Foundation, which launched the
games in 1986 as a Special Olympics,
pointed out that the Fame Games
began as an event "strictly for Jewish
people, but now reaches out to the
entire community and covers all reli-
gions and races." El
