long industrial leather belts ... If you
listened, and if the restaurant was not
crowded, you could hear them squeak-
ing quietly as they turned ... I can
almost put myself to sleep now by
thinking of them whirring away, slow-
ly, slowly, the belts chirruping occa-
sionally, the air moving softly down ...
Or up, since some of them ran back-
ward.
The food? ... It could vary ... One
lunch special was an excellent seafood
dish served with a small salad of bibb
lettuce, onions, mushrooms, tomato
and a couple of bacon-like chunks ... It
was arranged beautifully, and tasted as
good as it looked ... Lake perch was
tiny and crusty ... As much as I can
recollect, the veal stroganoff didn't fare
well.
Four broiled lamb chops cooked in
oil and lemon with just a flash of gar-
lic, was a triumph that inspired glut-
tony.
Jim served one of the better house
salads around ... and his creamy garlic
dressing was a dandy.
All the dinners were named for auto-
mobiles ... Anywhere else, this would-
n't have gone over ... Here it did.
The Strawberries Chantilly were
heaped in a little silver bowl, decorated
with whipped cream and laced with so
much Grand Marnier and brandy that
two of them would have had some
folks spinning a bit ... The Hummers
were among downtown Detroit's best.
KORN KORNER ... A husband
stepped on one of those penny scales
that tell you your fortune and weight
and dropped in a coin.
"Listen to this," he said to his wife,
showing her a small, white card. "It
says I'm energetic, bright, resourceful
and a great lover."
"Yeah," his wife nodded, "and it has
your weight wrong, too."
OLDIE BUT GOODIE Dept. ...
After having waited for an audience
quite a while, a Jewish gent is finally
allowed to see the Pope.
"Is it not true that you are the mes-
senger of God on Earth?" asks the
Jewish man.
"Yes it is, my son, How can I help
you?" says the Pope.
"Well you know, I own a little
restaurant back in Jerusalem. I have
inherited it from my father, who had it
from his father, and so on and so on.
"So the other day I was going through
my balance, when I noticed something
was not right."
"Yes, my son? What was it?" asks the
Pope.
"Well, I have an unpaid bill for 13
people dated year 1 A.D." Li
