JEWS IN THE NEWS le yen veteran horror film-goers are frenzied about Cabin Fever, a teenage-oriented horror flick that opens today in area theaters. The R-rated film, directed and co- written by Eli Roth, 31, in his fea- ture-film debut, received good advance reviews at the Toronto Film Festival and set horror- fan Web sites abuzz. This tale of a flesh-eating virus deci- mating stu- dents on vacation — Director Eli Roth: Ben to quote the Stiller look-alike. "Fright Fan" Web site — "memorably reinvigorates time-honored cliches to construct a jet-black chiller finely bal- anced between affectionate parody and stark originality. Roth's assured flair and keenly timed sucker-punch suspense continually impresses in this lurid delight." Roth grew up in New York, the son of a psychologist father and artist mother. He told Film Quarterly that his parents had a liberal attitude toward his desire to watch horror films and TV shows — they would just sit around as a family and analyze what was going on. (This liberal atti- tude continued at his bar mitzvah party, where he was "sawed" in half with a chainsaw and his bar mitzvah cake was splattered with fake blood.) Roth went to film school at NYU and served a long apprenticeship under director David Lynch. His next project is the teen comedy Scavenger Hunt, which he'll direct for Universal Pictures. • Roth resembles actor Ben Stiller. He told About.com that during the film- ing of Cabin Fever in North Carolina, he heard everywhere that he looked like Stiller. "Thank God for Ben Stiller," he added. "In the '80s, it was always like the blond guy from Karate Kid who got all the girls. But then in the early '90s, it was like the New York funny Jewish guy, which was me. "It was Seinfeld, Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller that kind of came into vogue. I owe a great deal to the three 'S's." — Nate Bloom, editor, www.jewhoo.corn SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 20,10-6 SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 10-5 More than 190 Artists • One of the Top-Rated • Children's Area: Free Admission Shows Nationwide Art & Activities Plus Free Parking in City Decks (2 hours Saturday, all day Sunday) • Food & Entertainment • Silent Auction SHAIN PARK - DOWNTOWN BIRMINGHAM For information call 248.456.8150 I www.CommonGroundSanctuary.org / www.ArtinthePark.info ART IN THE PARK BENEFITS COMMON GROUND SANCTUARY'S CRISIS SERVICES FOR YOUTHS,ADULTS AND FAMILIES Obsen7 .klatentric HOUR T E g[u1111A K.
