Bridge Communities

"Music Bridging Communities" is
the theme of a series of elementary
school workshops that will culmi-
nate in a chamber jazz concert fea-
turing the Jeff Haas Quartet and
the Phoenix Ensemble 3 p.m.
Sunday, Sept. 21, at the Northwest
Activities Center in Detroit.
The concert is presented by the
Detroit Jewish Initiative of the
Jewish Community Council.
Admission is free. Free transporta-
tion is available from the Jewish
Community Center buildings in
West Bloomfield and in Oak Park.
Haas will conduct diversity music
workshops at the Northwest
Activities Center on Friday, Sept.
19. Students from Schulze and John
R. King elementary schools in
Detroit, Burton Elementary School
in Huntington Woods and Hillel
Day School of Metropolitan
Detroit in Farmington Hills will
participate.
Each workshop is based on a
composition by Haas and empha-
sizes use of music to promote racial,
cultural and religious diversity and
awareness. The composition is
based in jazz and classical music
traditions.
Haas' composition for this project
was supported by an ArtServe
Michigan creative artist grant that
was matched by the JCCouncil.
The workshops' co-sponsors
include the Northwest Activities
Center, the Jewish Community
Center and African American Family
