Aic presents that the membership numbers are beginning to climb. Budgeted member- ship sales goals for the fiscal year total 1,136, or 170 new Executive Fitness members, 366 new Fitness level mem- bers and 600 new General members. The total current membership at the Kahn Center is 2,573 units (families or individuals), says Stone. "Although this information is early, it's positive and we're hoping it will contin- ue to grow the next couple months," A MUNK SITOW Sorkin says. JCC President Hannan Lis says what gives him most pleasure about the JCC this year is the renaissance reflected with the opening of the Fitness Center and the young new members it is attracting. "People are finding the Center to be relevant and an exciting place to be," Lis says. "We'd like to see everybody in the Jewish community find that being involved in the JCC makes a real differ- ence in their daily life." The Jewish Community Center has received its third grant from the Community Foundation for Southeastern Michigan (CFSEM). The two-year $188,000 grant goes toward the creation of Nature's Way-The Great Outdoors, an environmental program geared to children ages 6-12 and their families. "It's wonderful," says Margo Weitzer, JCC assistant executive director. "I feel fabulous about what we'll be able to do." In partnership with the National Wildlife Fund, the grant will allow the JCC to use its developed and partially developed land on the West Bloomfield campus, which includes woods, gently rolling hills and ponds. One aspect of Nature's Way will focus on stewardship of the environment. Children and families will learn to care for natural habitats, and even create one in their own backyards. NWF experts will train staff and help develop pro- gramming. Trails will be marked highlighting environmental features; ponds will be stocked for fishing; bird watching will be encouraged; and families will learn the essentials of camping. "It'll be a state park-like environment," Weitzer says. "Shalom Street will be involved, too," she says. "It will add an outdoor compo- nent to what we're teaching already indoors." Another element of Nature's Way, Weitzer says, will be enjoyment of the environment for enjoyment's sake — family fitness in the woods, nature hikes, cross-country skiing and more. The grant begins in October, and Weitzer expects the first programming to start in mid-winter. The CFSEM, a permanent communi- ty endowment established in 1984, gave 11 other grants Sept. 8 totaling $2 mil- lion. Among the other recipients are the Detroit Zoological Society, the Arab Community Center for Social and Economic Services and the New Detroit Science Center. All programs deal with the environment. — Keri Guten Cohen Bloomfield Plaza • 6536 Telegraph Rd. • Bloomfield Hills,MI • 248-855-8877 • 755020. , Visit vvww.PRESTONBURKEGALLERY.com For Outrageous Discounts on Custom Framing 754.530 - r139Eft$0•qE J-CO $ .F9 coemmqxGmExr-fue HOURS: Tuesday-Saturday 10am-5pm Closed Sunday & Monday 24g-366-ogo9 7938 Cooley Lake Rd. • Waterford, Michigan 48327 Accepting Fall Consignments 9/12 2003 45
