The Holocaust Memorial Foundation of Illinois will dedicate a new 46,000-square-foot space in Skokie, Ill. The new facility will house perma- nent exhibit space, a state-of-the-art library and computer center, a 300-seat auditorium, meeting rooms and space for traveling exhibitions. In its current location, the museum serves as an edu- cational facility for students, teachers and other visitors. The museum is being built after the city of Skokie withdrew its opposition to the plan. New York/JTA — Leni Riefenstahl, known for her documentary film that depicted a 1934 Nazi rally at Nuremberg, died Sept. 8 at the age of 101. Critics said Riefenstahl helped promote a Nazi aesthetic of beauty and purity in Triumph of the Will and other films that she made during the Hitler era. But Riefenstahl denied that she was a propagandist, saying her films repre- sented a search for beauty. She also denied any romantic link with Hitler. Boycotted after the. war, Riefenstahl made a comeback in the 1960s with films of the Nuba people of Africa and of underwater life. Barbie Doll Is Evil — Saudis Court Petitioned On Scholarships Riyad/JTA— Barbie dolls are Jewish tools, the Saudi government is saying. The statuesque blond dolls promote the lewd behavior of a "perverted Western world," say posters distributed by the Saudi religious police in schools, mosques and hospitals in the kingdom. The poster, called "The Jewish Doll," is being distributed by the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, a government agency headed by a Wahabbi cleric appointed by King Fand. Saudi officials in Washington had no comment when asked if the poster propagates religious hatred against Jews, Christians, Hindus or non-Wahabbi Muslims. Washington/JTA — Orthodox groups have filed a brief with the U.S. Supreme Court asking that students studying religion be allowed to receive state-funded scholarships. The brief, principally authored by the National Jewish Coalition on Law and Political Affairs — which includes the Orthodox Union and Agudath Israel of America — argues that the study of religious texts is an essential component of the free exercise of religion. The American Jewish Congress has filed an opposing brief. Joshua Davey was denied a Washington state scholarship because he was to study pastoral studies at Northwest College. Jerusalem/JTA — The European Union will designate all branches of Hamas as parts of a terrorist organization, includ- ing its political wing. The decision was taken Sept. 6 at a two-day meeting of E.U. foreign minis- ters in northern Italy. The move will block funding to Hamas-run political organizations, charities and social wel- fare associations, in addition to its mili- tary wing, which the European Union already had branded as terrorist. "A consensus emerged to decide on putting Hamas on the list of terrorist organizations," French Foreign Minister Dominique de Villepin told reporters. The ministers also deplored the resig- nation of Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas. (248) 967-1161 q-4. Despite protests from officials affiliat- ed with the camp's museum, three American-built, Israeli-modified F-15s flew over the camp Sept. 4. The aircraft crews carried the names of those killed in Auschwitz on Sept. 4, 1943, and the pilots included descendants of Holocaust survivors. The Israeli jets, which had been invited by the Polish government to help celebrate the 85th anniversary of the Polish Air Force, were supposed to do the flyover with two Polish fighter jets, but the Poles dropped out due to poor weather conditions.
