Berkley High School boys tennis coach Steve Weingarden earned two honors after last spring's successful season. Weingarden was voted region- al coach of the year by area coaches and was named the All-Area coach by the Royal Oak Daily Tribune. The Bears were 10-1-1 in dual matches last year and shared the OAA Division 2 championship with a 5-0-1 record and a second-place finish in the league tournament. Berkley finished third in its state Class A regional. Berkley's girls tennis team, coached by Mike Ross, includes five Jewish players. Freshman Katie Wallace begins the year as the No. 4 singles starter, sophomore Miriam Blake plays No. 2 doubles, seniors Jackie Katz and Sarah Schwartz form the No. 3 doubles team and Allison Bornstein plays No. 4 doubles. On Sept. 6, Young Israel of Southfield honors its softball team at kiddush following Shabbat services. Young Israel won the Men's Inter- Congregational Softball League title for the fourth time in six years. The B'nai B'rith bowling season starts Sept. 8. But Bloch turned the tables in the playoffs, beating Brotherhood II, then capturing the post-season title with a 13-3 victory over Brotherhood III. Bloch, managed by Rick Sherline, won its second championship in the past three years.
