t's September and that means back-to-school. In
past years, we've covered the first day of school,
new teachers and even fashionable new looks. This
year Style at the Jewish News introduces you to a spe-
cial playground in Waterford for special children — the
All Kids Playground. The National Council of Jewish
Women funded this playground accessible to all children
with special needs. Read Lynne Schreiber's inspiring
story, see Angie Baan's poignant photography and admire
NCJW's dedication.

try the Birmingham House Tour sponsored by The
Community House. Lisa Brody, Style at the Jewish News
writer and Community House Tour chairperson, gives us
a preview. Brody interviewed Shirley and Jerry Gotthelf,
whose home will be featured. So, peek inside this lovely
home with personality and unique art. It's one of several
homes that you can see on Sept. 16.
Speaking about beautiful Birmingham houses, we take
you to Janice Steinhardt's abode where she hosted an
event in memory of her husband, attorney Fred
Steinhardt. The event raised funds to create The
Frederick D. Steinhardt Research Fund for Pancreatic
Cancer at the University of Michigan Comprehensive
Cancer Center.
If you're wondering about traveling to Israel, missions
and trips to Israel are on, especially from the Detroit area.
Fox2 reporter Robin Schwartz had so much fun, she
wrote a piece for us about her experience on the
Federation Young Adult Mission in July.
I recently attended a pre-mission meeting at the home
of Deena and Stuart Lockman for Federation's Michigan
Miracle Mission 4. This Mission will take place April 18-
28, and everyone over age 18 is invited.
It's a life-changing event, and I speak from experience
as a participant on the very first mission from Detroit.
