A graduate of Berkley High School, she went on to the University of Michigan, where she studied compara- tive Hebrew and Yiddish literature and earned a master's degree in Near Eastern studies. Mechnikov was assistant director of the American Technion Society; ran a start-up publishing business for two years; and has done Yiddish transla- tions for the National Center for Jewish Film and others. For three years, she ran the Yiddish program at Brandeis University in Waltham, Mass. About three years ago, she married Russian-born Igor Mechnikov, who's usually known as Gabe or Gavriel. When the couple was expecting their first child, they moved back to Michigan to be with family.
