N SEPTEMBER 11, 2001, one hundred and fifty Greater Detroit
Jewish community members who had planned to spend the day
in a charity outing., instead watched the day's horrific events
in shock. They decided to respond as a community to commission
and dedicate a new Torah to honor th.e memory of the victims of the
destruction and tragedy. The Torah was written in Israel, and will be
completed at the Memorial Ceremony.
Throughout the day, the tragic events will be marked through memorial
services and candlelighting for the slain, as well as recognition of the
heroi.c contributions of the armed forces, police and fire departments,
presentations to coma imity groups and schools on the day's implications
and meaning, and the imperative to counter darkness with solidarity,
kindness, benevolence, and social and communal volunteerism.
