Medium Is Massage

I

f your new baby is having a diffi-
cult time sleeping, maybe what he
or she needs is a nice massage.
The Journal of Developmental and
Behavioral Pediatrics reports on an
Israeli study that shows how gentle
strokes just before bed may help chil-
dren sleep through the night.
The Israeli researchers worked with
a group of 20 mothers and their
infants.
The six-week study showed that
babies who had received massages were
more alert in the early morning and
afternoon, as opposed to non-mas-
saged babies who were wide awake at
midnight.
The massaged infants also had a
greater production of the sleep hor-
mone melatonin, lower stress levels,
more weight gain and better motor
function than those who were not
massaged.

High Hopes

Omri Galin wants nothing more than
to jump at 120,000 feet. From an air-
plane, of course.
Omri's interest in skydiving began
when he was 8 years old and his family
came to vacation in Eilat. Ten years
later, Omri was taking a skydiving class
(a birthday present from his mother),
and now, at 18, Omri is already an
expert.
"I didn't know what to expect; I was
frightened and I was screaming," Omri
says of his first dive.
Omri, whose skydiving nickname is
Fly Baby, is hardly alone when it comes
to young skydivers in Israel. Every
Friday at Skydive Eilat, one of two sky-
diving clubs in Israel, many teens line
up to take the jump. A full 20 percent
of the skydivers are girls (including
Omri's sister, Efrat).
One of the most popular events is the
Tandem, a skydive for two.
While you must be 18 years or older
to sign up for a skydiving course, even
those as young as 13 can jump Tandem.
Skydiving is, of course, not for every-
one. Even if you have the desire you
may not have the money (a four-day
sky diving course at Skydive Eilat costs
$1,000). But for some it's positively
addictive, Omri says.
