Sports Medal Laden Maccabi athletes return with medals and memories. T een-age athletes from Detroit and Ann Arbor par- ticipated in five-day JCC Maccabi Games in St. Louis, Houston and New Jersey during the last two weeks. Coaches provided the following results to the Jewish News: ST. LOUIS Orit 8/29 2003 76 Table Tennis — In boys age 13-14 sin- gles, Andrew Korby took the gold medal. In girls 13-14, Emily Stern took the gold and Nicole Bishop took silver. In the girls championship match, Stern was slightly injured in the fourth game, which made it an interesting competi- tion. Stern and Bishop are best friends and neighbors, and did not want to beat each other. In boys 15-16 table tennis, Sam Yashinsky, playing in his fourth Maccabi Games, took the bronze medal. In 13-14 doubles, Korby won silver; in 15-16, Mike and Sam Yashinsky won silver. All the Maccabi athletes cleaned Forest Park in St. Louis as part of a day of "caring and sharing." On another afternoon, the athletes participated in either a racquetball tournament or a track meet. Sam Yashinsky won silver medals in high jump, shot put and the 100 meters. Tennis — Emily Jaffe and Michael Kaufman won gold in 15-16. Jaffe and Rena Rosenzveig won doubles. Katie Wallace of Huntington Woods was paired with Jaime Harris of Philadelphia, and they won bronze in 13-14 doubles. Baseball — The Detroit team partici- pated in some hard-fought games. Although their record did not indicate it, they played their opponents evenly, but did not have the experience to stay with them till the end. Softball — Detroit won the silver medal, losing to Greater Washington in the championship game, 17-7. It was Detroit's first appearance in a gold medal game since 1988. The game was much closer than the final score. Down 2-0 after one inning, the Detroit girls scored three in the sec- ond on a double by Michelle Neff, a walk to Sivan Levy, a single by Jaclyn Palmer and a sacrifice fly by Alycyn Goldberg. GW took a 4-3 lead in the third and then scored five in the fourth. Detroit fought back from the 9-3 deficit with three in the fifth inning on walks to Danielle Kaplan and Anne Thomas sandwiched around a single by Stefani Silberstein, a sacrifice fly by Michelle Neff and a single by Stephanie in the 200 free relay. In girls 13-14, Jacqui Owens and Lauren Kaczander won gold in the 200 and 400 medley relays and bronze in the 200 free relay. In 15-16 girls, Rebecca Nyquist won gold in the 500 free, 100 fly, 200 back, 400 individual medley and 200 free relay, silver in 50 and 100 back, 200 and 400 medley relays, and bronze in the 100 free. Haley Mitchell won gold in the 200 fly and 200 free relay, silver in 100, 200 < and 500 free, and 400 medley and free relays, – and bronze in 100 fly, 200 back and 200 med- ley relay. Allison Shatz and Gayle Myerson earned gold in the 200 free relay, silver in the 400 medley and free relays, Detroit swimmers Michael Spickler, Jacqui Owens, and bronze in the 200 Lauren Kaczander and Gayle Myerson hang at the pool. medley relay.
