Frankel has directed more than 100 plays and musicals, taught theater arts at 10 different universities and colleges, and now is a New York University fac- ulty member. His books include Writing the Broadway Musical (DaCapo, 2000). Kiss Me, Kate was an ingenious piece of work by Bella and Cole," he says. She juxtaposed the basic plot of Shrew with the tribulations of the unhappy couple as they appear in a revival of the comedy. As the plot of Shrew unfolds on stage, the offstage scenes develop their turbulent romance. "In this way, Kate follows the pattern of Shrew, which also used the device of a play within a play." Shrew had been the working title of the musical, until the producers discov- ered that Porter had written the words "Kiss Me, Kate" on some sheet music as possible lyrics. "Porter's score is an example of what he meant when he said he had to 'write Jewish tunes' to be successful," Frankel points out. Cole Porter: a Biography, by William McBrien (Alfred A. Knopf, New York, 1998), tells how Porter reacted to critical newspaper reviews of his songs by the Brooklyn Jewish Examiner in 1926. He told Richard Rodgers that, in order to have hits, "I'll write Jewish COUPON ---- a tunes." The biography describes "Jewish tunes" as shifting from major to minor keys and using the interval of a step- and-a-half. Rodgers later said: "I laughed at what I took to be a joke, but ... Cole did exactly that. Just hum 'My Heart Belongs to Daddy,' or 'I Love Paris,' or `Easy to Love', or the line, 'Only you beneath the moon and under the sun [from 'Night and Day]. "It's one of the ironies of the musical theater that, despite the abundance of Jewish composers, the one who has writ- ten the most enduring 'Jewish' music should be an Episcopalian millionaire." Porter's major Jewish songwriting rivals were Rodgers, George Gershwin, Jerome Kern and Irving Berlin. Porter and Berlin were fierce competi- tors, but respected each other. Whenever one would score a hit song, he would receive a letter of congratulations and high praise from the other. Porter had a crippling horseback riding accident in 1937 and died at 73 in 1964. ❑ Kiss Me, Kate runs at Detroit's Fisher Theatre 8 p.m. Tuesdays- Fridays, 2 and 8 p.m. Saturdays and 2 and 7:30 p.m. Sundays, Sept. 2-21. $32-$59.50.
