Discomfort has been minimized with the elimination of heavy forces. More efficient and lighter forces with arch- wires made of new materials have brought smiles to ortho- dontic patients. Some wires that cause movement are tem- perature sensitive, so patients have more control as to the Nelson Hersh DDS, MS level of comfort and speed at which the teeth move. Warm foods and mouth temperatures activate some of these Licensed Specialist wires, while if a patient feels uncomfortable, a cold drink brings a smile, and a meal can be enjoyed. Headgears are virtually a technique of the past, as alternative techniques now exist. The actual braces have become smaller, so less noticeable, with the added benefit that with the small- er braces come lighter forces. Titanium braces are available for added comfort or a different look. Clear braces have been improved to resist stain and are almost invisible. Techniques such as "invisalign" are now available for adults with mild to moderate cases, which eliminate braces but must be utilized on select cases. Fun and creativity can be brought into the picture as patients can now select and change colors used for braces monthly. With the school season here, you may see kids choosing their school colors. You may even choose glow in the dark colors and there may be as many as 70 colors to choose from at each appointment. Retainers are also more fun as we offer from any color, decal or design, to clear that looks like an invisalign or bleaching trays, depending upon the individ- ual situation.
