Aug. 4
Lisa (Apfelblat) and Alan Wittenberg are
thrilled to announce the birth of their
daughter, Elle Jordyn Wittenberg
(Hadar Ayala). Welcoming File home
with lots of hugs and kisses are big
brothers Dylan Alexander, 3, and Max
Spencer, 2. Sharing in their happiness are
ecstatic grandparents Ellen and Allen
Apfelblat of West Bloomfield, Eileen and
Sidney Bradley of Farmington Hills and
Larry and Carol Wittenberg of West
Bloomfield. Elle is named in loving
memory of her maternal great-grand-
mother Hinda Apfelblat.

Bar/Bat Mitzvah

Melissa Lauren Balan, daughter of
Steven and Rachel Balan and Debbie
and David Leaver, will be called to the
Torah on Friday, Aug. 29, on the occa-
sion of her bat mitz-
vah at Temple Israel.
She is the sister of
Andrew and Joshua
and grandchild of
Bluma and Don
Herman and Judy
and Jerry Balan. She
is also the grandchild
of the late Saralyn
Balan.
Melissa attends Abbott Middle School
in West Bloomfield, where she is an
honor student. She found it particularly
meaningful to donate funds to the Israel
Guide Dog Center for the Blind as part
of her mitzvah projects.

Ian Seth Bensman, son of Randi and
Sam Simko and Paul Bensman, will cele-
brate his bar mitzvah on Saturday, Aug.
30, at Temple Israel. His sisters are Carly
and Alyssa and his grandparents are
Barrie and Harvey
Chafficin and Diana
and Morris
Bensman. He is also
the grandchild of the
late Charlotte and
Leo Simko. His
proud great-grand-
mother is Rose
Chaffkin.
Ian attends
Warner Middle School in Farmington
Hills. His most meaningful mitzvah
project was spending time at the JARC
Berlin home, playing games with resi-
dents.

Brian Hale Burnstein was called to the
Torah as a bar mitzvah on Saturday, Aug.
23, at Temple Shir Shalom. His parents

are Sandi and Larry
Burnstein and he is
the brother of Nikki.
Proud grandparents
are Sema and Sam
Yarost and Belrose
Burnstein. His very
proud great-grand-
mother is Sarah
Elkowitz. He is also
the grandchild of the late Elaine Yarost
and the late Burton Burnstein.
Brian is an honor student at Walled
Lake Middle School. His most meaning-
ful mitzvah project included helping
pack and distribute food at the Yad Ezra
food bank in Berkley.

Taylor Kay Cohn celebrated her bat
mitzvah on Saturday, Aug. 23, at Temple
Beth El. She is the daughter of Lori and
Mark Cohn and sister of Ryan. Proud
grandparents are
Renee and Edward
Stone, Phyllis and S.
Leonard Cohn.
Taylor is an honor
student at
Bloomfield Hills
Middle School. Her
mitzvah projects
including making
dolls for the
Hadassah medical doll project and
donating her hair to Locks of Love.

Alex Ethan Fishman will celebrate his
bar mitzvah Friday, Aug. 29, at Temple
Israel. He is the son
of Debra and Dr.
Randy Fishman and
brother of Hannah
and Liza. Sharing in
the simchah will be
grandparents
Thelma and Harvey
Lipsitt and Claire
and Louis Fishman.
An honor student at West Hills
Middle School in Bloomfield Hills, Alex
found it meaningful to collect and
donate food to Yad Ezra in Berkley. He
also participates during Temple Israel's
housing of the homeless.

The Sol Draehler Program in Jewish Communal Leadership is a collaborative

program with the University of Michigan School of Social Work and the
Frankel Center for Jewish Studies. The program awards a Master's degree
in Social Work and a Certificate in Jewish Communal Service and Judaic
Studies to prepare students for assuming positions of professional
leadership in the Jewish community. Dual advanced degree options in
Judaic Studies, Business, Law, Public Health, Education. Information, and
Public Policy allow students to integrate their Jewish Communal Service
with greater expertise and practice in these areas.
