Fellow merchants and customers always stopped in, even when they weren't buying something. Police from the nearby Fort and Green station would drop by for coffee. Mr. Lifton was univer sally liked- he was a warm, funny guy, says his son, Don Lifton of Bloomfield Hills. He was making funny remarks to the end." Maurice "Maury" Lifton, 89, of Bloomfield Hills, died of heart failure Aug. 26, 2003, after a long illness. "Papa was the most fun and so funny," says granddaughter Katherine "Katie Borman of Bloomfield Hills. Our grandparents made New Year's Eve parties for us when we were kids," says grandson Robert Lifton of Troy. They didn't go out with their friends. They wanted to be with us." In high school, Mr. Lifton worked at a store in the Meyer Jewelry chain. During World War II, he served in Burma, India and China. He was part of the convoy that built the Burma Road across the Himalayan Mountains, used to transport war supplies. When he returned after the war, Mr. Lifton bought what had been Meyer's first jewelry store, located in the southwest Detroit neighborhood. In 1982, after three decades, he sold the business and retired. But not for long. After two years, Mr. Lifton worked part time for Sydney Krandall and Sons Jewelers in Troy. He was . Mr. Aronoff is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Beth and Jack Rosenthal of Maryland; brother, Mel Aronoff of Ann Arbor; niece and nephew, Rebecca Rosenthal and Jay Rosenthal. "And he was always there for you," adds Katie, remembering the time she was ill as a student at the University of Michigan. He drove me up for my exams and then drove me back. And I didn't have to ask. He was really special." Mr. Lifton was a member of Perfection Lodge F&A/vi, a Shriner and a member of the Jewish War Veterans. He is survived by his wife, Bertha "Bert" Lifton; son and daughter-in- law, Donald and Susan Lifton of Bloomfield Hills; grandchildren, Katherine and Gilbert Borman, and Robert A. Lifton; great-grandsons, Harry and Sam Borman; and sisters and brother-in-law, Helen and Edward Biegel of California and Florence Brownfain of Detroit. Interment was at Adat Shalom Memorial Park.
