The movie, about a Protestant the- ologian who becomes part of the German resistance against Hider, will be shown Aug. 25 at the Detroit Institute of Arts. "I chose this film because of the fascinating subject matter and the impas- sioned feelings that come across! says Elliot Wilhelm, DIA film curator. "It was submitted to us recent- ly, and I thought it would be very valuable to include." Martin Doblmeier, producer and director of Bonhoeffer, has had a lifelong interest in religion and became aware of this subject while still a high- school. student. He has made a number of TV films about faith, his- tory and social issues, including Church Without Borders and American Byzanfine. "My focus [for the Bonhoeffer project] was [not so much] orethe decision Dietrich Bonhoeffer made [but] on the deep inner struggles that brought him from Christian pacifist priest to an active member in the plots to kill Adolf Hitler," explains Doblmeier, president and founder of the Virginia-based Journey Films. "I also wanted to focus on the iso- lation Bonhoeffer felt as he stepped further and further away from his fellow pastors who were falling over themselves in support of Hitler." The documentary, which uses the voice of Klaus Maria Brandauer as Bonhoeffer, includes interviews with the Lutheran minister's family and friends as they recall how he devel- oped his social conscience. The 90- minute work also includes commen- tary by historians and theologians, such as John de Gruchy and Desmond Tutu. The historical footage of Hitler speaking before vast crowds of cheering people serves to dramatize Bonhoeffer's courage in taking on the issue of anti-Semitism with scant support. The movie was shot on location in Germany and the United States. Bonhoeffer, who is shown in the film as being inspired by the civil rights movement in America, presented his views in books in addition to expressing them by working underground. Cost of Discipleship, Letters and Papers from Prison and Ethics were written during his struggle, which resulted in his being jailed, tor mented and killed by the Nazis. "I believe part of the reason the film is get- ting attention now is because many of the issues Bonhoeffer faced — the role of the church in the modern world, national loyalty and personal con- science, what the call to being a `peacemaker' really means — are issues we continue to struggle with today," says Doblmeier about his first feature-length documentary film. ❑ Bonhoeffer screens 7:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 25, at the Detroit Film Theatre in the Detroit Institute of Arts. $6.501$5.50 seniors, students, DIA mem- bers.
