Eye Of The Beholder

A

s cease-fires go, it's seemingly as deadly a time as ever during 34
months of Palestinian-provoked terror. Tuesday's bus blast, which
killed at least 20 people and injured more than 100, including many
children, was the latest in a string of attacks since the terror groups unilateral-
ly called for a three-month truce on June 29. At least 28 Israelis and foreigners
have died by Palestinian terrorism since the cease-fire.
On Saturday, Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz told the Israeli cabinet that
Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat has given his subordinates clear
signs indicating a "green light" for the renewal of terror attacks against the
Jewish state. There's evidence Arafat is even funding attacks, Israeli officials
said.
The target of Tuesday's suicide bomber, a bus filled with ultra-Orthodox
families returning from the mitzvah of praying at the Western Wall, reinforced
once and for all the fence must go up and Israel's defensive actions must go
on. Our coverage of the attack aboard the No. 2 Egged bus begins on page
22.
Allan Gale, associate director of the Jewish Community Council of
Metropolitan Detroit, summed up the Jewish hope well: "We are again
plunged into mourning over senseless deaths. This is an unwanted conflict;
Israelis want peace and, as in the past, are willing to settle all differences
with the Arab world in peaceful negotiations."
Meanwhile, Shabbat shalom!
