Happy Memories
What Rothstein remembers most
about her daughter's wedding is how
friends and family pitched in and ran
home to get flashlights and candles,
hosted fast-minute housefuls of out-of-
town guests who were scheduled to
stay at the hotel and those who she
said, "schlepped and set up tables."
"And people stayed," she said. "I had
to stay, but my guests didn't. And,
even in the heat, they danced — and
the band never ran out of power."
The next morning, as the power
outage continued, the Rothsteins host-
ed 110 guests at a post-wedding
breakfast at their home. Again friends
pitched in, bringing rolls and a huge
strawberry shortcake from freezers.
Even when "the heavens opened up"
just as the guests sat down in the
Rothstein's back yard, it didn't damper
the mood of gratefulness at being with
family and friends.
One concern Rothstein said she did-
n't have was the ayin horah, the evil
eye. "There's no ayin horah here," she
said jokingly. "Nobody would want
my wedding."
More seriously, she recounts her
happiness at how "the community
made this simchah [happy event] a
simchah."
And the most important thing?
"My daughter didn't stop smil-
ing," she said. "And at the end of
the evening, she came to me and
said, 'Thank you for a beautiful
wedding.'" ❑
"It took five minutes and $20 to
clean it up," said Hillel Director -
Michael Brooks, who has been fielding
phone calls and e-mails from concerned
alumni, individuals and the news media
from as far away as Israel, Sweden and
Australia. A story about the incident
appeared in Monday's Jerusalem Post.
"It's phenomenal the support we have
received from the local community,"
said Brooks, noting that within 15
minutes of reporting the vandalism,
Ann Arbor Police Chief Daniel J. Oates
was at his front door to underscore his
concern and tell Brooks the AAPD had
offered a $500 reward for the arrest and
conviction of the perpetrators.
"The thought is that it was done by
high school students and they will
talk," said Brooks.
Anyone with information about the
vandalism is asked to contact the con-
fidential 24-hour Tip Line of the
AAPD at (734) 996-3199.
