embers of the Michigan House
of Representatives Policy Cost
Committee toured JVS in Southfield
on Aug. 19 before meeting to gather
information on mental health parity
and the cost of prescription drugs.
Both subjects are important issues to
the Jewish community, said Susan
Herman, director of the Lansing-based
Michigan Jewish Conference. Strongly
supporting-mental health parity and
controlling prescription drug costs are
part of the organization's public policy
agenda, she said.
This is the first time a formal legislative
hearing has been held at JVS, she said.
Spokespersons from substance abuse
organizations, the Michigan Mental
Health Association, the Michigan
Psychological Association and AARP
testified before four members of the
subcommittee.
All agreed that spiraling prescription
costs must be contained, and the short-
term costs from employers required to
provide equal benefits for mental health
as they provide for physical health will
save money in the long run in terms of
proper diagnosis and treatment.

TOUGH QUESTION

mid the multi-state power out-
A age, last week's Jewish.com
question had a relatively low
response.
People were asked: Do you sub-
scribe to your local Jewish newspa-
per? Of 104 respondents, 64 (61.5
percent) said yes and 40 (38.5 per-
cent) said no.
Next week's question on
Jewish.com: Do you think the
media has gone overboard in its
coverage of Arnold Schwarzeneg-
gees campaign for governor in the
California recall election?
