The center proposed at the site where more than 30,000 Jews were killed in September 1941 "will do damage to Jewish interests" and "diminish the memory of the Jewish community," said the group, known as the Save Babi Yar committee. The objections come after Ukrainian Jewish leader Josef Zissels led protests against the memorial in Ukraine. The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, which is funding the memorial, said, "The Jewish community of Ukraine is the only legitimate forum for making a decision on the issue of a Jewish memorial near Babi Yar. "The Ukrainian Jewish community is comprised of dozens of sovereign and independent Jewish organizations, head- ed by indigenous Jewish leaders. The overwhelming majority of those organi- zations support a Jewish memorial near Babi Yar." 9$ FOR $ =9 FOR 3 ja 9 THREE 1 4- - ONE Ahava Cleansing Milk Softens as it cleans without leaving skin taut and dry. Yehuda Abraham is one of three men arrested after one tried to sell a surface- to-air missile to FBI informants posing as terrorists who wanted to shoot down a commercial plane. Abraham, an Afghan Jew in his 70s who lives in Queens, N.Y., helps to run a family jew- elry business in Manhattan called Ambuy, associates said. He is expected to face charges that he illegally transmitted money to finance the missile scheme. Ambuy has a store in Jedda, Saudi Arabia, and sells jewelry to members of royal families, according to the company Web site. An associate described Abraham as an occasional syn- agogue-goer who gives to charity. Years ago, he was involved in bringing Jews from Afghanistan to the United States. Christians Give Toward Israel Jerusalem/JTA — The International Fellowship of Christians and Jews will donate $650,000 toward the purchase of school bags for Israeli first-graders. The donation to needy and immi- grant families comes in response to a request from Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, the group said in a press release. "Many families in Israel today cannot afford schoolbags or other necessities for their children," said the group's presi- dent, Rabbi Yechiel Eckstein. "Our Christian friends in America, whose sup- port allows us to do so much for Israel, will put a smile on the face of more than 25,000 needy children beginning their first school year." The Ministry of Education will dis- tribute the school bags through the wel- fare departments of 220 cities across Israel before school starts on Sept. 1.
