New York/JTA — Mel Gibson's new
film will fuel anti-Semitism if it is
released without changes, the Anti-
Defamation League said.
The organization says The Passion
blames Jews for Jesus' crucifixion and
relies on sinister medieval stereotypes
and historical errors. Christians and
Jews long have worked to negate the
teachings about Jewish complicity in
Jesus' death that The Passion features,
the ADL said. Gibson is a member of
a fundamentalist Roman Catholic sect
that repudiates Vatican teachings clear-
ing the Jews of the charge of deicide.

New York/JTA — A top Hong Kong
fashion chain is pulling a new line of
Nazi-themed clothing amid protests.
I.T. Ltd., the company that owns
the chain, put up Nazi banners and
flags in its stores this past weekend to
advertise the new line of clothes with
swastikas and other Nazi symbols,

Reuters reported.
When Israel, Germany and some
consumers complained, the company
removed the flags but kept selling the
clothing,
b, until the Israeli Consulate in
Hong Kong protested.

Bar Exam Date,
Holiday Conflict

New York/JTA —New York state may
change the date of its 2004 bar exam,
which is scheduled to take place on
Tisha b'Av.
The move to change the July 27,
2004, date comes after complaints
from legislator Ryan Scott Karben.
Many observant Jews fast -on Tisha
b'Av, which marks the destruction of
the First and Second Temples.

wo suicide bombings this
week shattered the relative
calm that had taken hold in
Israel and the West Bank
this summer.
Yehezkel Yekutieli, 43 and a father of
two, was killed in a blast Tuesday morn-
ing in the Israeli city of Rosh Hdayin.
Erez Hershkovitz, 18, was killed in an
attack in the West Bank settlement of
Ariel. The Al Aksa Martyrs Brigades of
the Palestinian-led Fatah movement
claimed responsibility for the Rosh
Hdayin attack and the Islamic funda-
mentalist group Hamas for the Ariel
attack.
The attacks represent the most blatant
violation of the cease-fire that
Palestinian terrorist groups declared June
29. Seven Israelis and 12 Palestinians —
excludino-
suicide bombers — have been

killed since the cease-fire took effect.
The Palestinian Authority condemned
the attacks, but Prime Minister
Mahmoud Abbas said they were pro-
voked by recent Israeli anti-terror raids
in the West Bank.
In a raid last Friday, one Israeli soldier
and four Palestinians were killed in a
clash. Staff Sgt. Ro'i Oren, 20, was
killed in battle at a Nablus refugee camp
as his Israeli commando unit searched
for a senior Hamas terrorist, who was
among those killed.
In a separate incident on Sunday, an
Israeli teenager was killed when a
Hezbollah anti-aircraft shell landed in
the northern Israeli town of Shlomi.
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon
blamed the Palestinian Authority, saying
it had failed to fulfill its pledge to crack
down on terrorist groups.
