before beina cast with him, went profes-
° while attending the
sional in 1968
University of California at Los Angeles
as a theater major. She auditioned for a
company of You're a Good Man, Charlie
Brown, won the role of Lucy and stayed
for the entire two-year run.
Over the next few years, she played
Hodel in four different companies of
Fiddler on the Roof and went on to cre-
ate the role of Rizzo in the first national
company of Grease with John Travolta.
One of Kaye's first Broadway parts was
as Lily in On the Twentieth Century in
1978. When she went on tour with the
show, she met her then husband-to-be,
actor-singer David Green, and the two
have worked together in cabaret revues.
Besides appearing in musical after
musical, from Pajama Game to
Phantom of the Opera
she won a
Tony Award for the latter in her role
as Carlotta, the opera diva — Kaye
also has paid tribute to composers by
doing a string of concerts, each devot-
ed to one Broadway icon.
Her work with Jewish themes has
included an evening of sketches based
on Sholem Aleichem short stories,
which teamed her with Theodore Bikel
and Bruce Adler for a tour throughout
Florida.
"I've performed for Seeds of Peace
and given the organization tickets to
Mamma Mia," says Kaye, also a mem-
ber of Hadassah.
"I feel very strongly about Seeds of
Peace. If there can be any hope for
peace in the Middle East, the place to
begin is getting kids to listen to each
other and somehow build a kind of
community that will allow them to live
and prosper with one another."
Although Kaye has appeared in
Michigan, this will be her first time at
Meadow Brook.
•
"We have to rehearse with the orches-
tra as if we were performing a play,"
says Kaye, a garden hobbyist and golfer
proud to say she's the aunt of Jonathan
Kaye, who recently won the Buick
Westchester Classic.
"I've worked at the Hollywood Bowl
and Wolf Trap, and I like the outdoors
because there's always a party atmos-
phere." ❑
