Shabbat Program Explores Concerns The American Jewish Committee, Metropolitan Detroit Chapter and Congregation Shaarey Zedek have teamed up to cosponsor a summer Shabbat afternoon exploring Jewish concerns around the world. This year's pro- gram, "The Changing Germany," Petri will begin at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16. The community is invited to attend minchah services, a dialogue with the visiting consul general of Germany, Dr. Alexander Petri, and enjoy a seudah shlishit at the Shaarey Zedek West Bloomfield, B'nai Israel Center, in West Bloomfield. AJC chapter vice president and congregation member Jay Knoll will help facilitate the discussion. Rabbi Lee Buckman will lead afternoon serv- ices. There is no charge for the after- noon program. Shul Hosts Founder Of Jews For Judaism The Shul will host a Shabbaton with Julius Ciss on Friday, Aug. 15, at 6890 W Maple, West Bloomfield. Candlelighting will be at 7:30 p.m. followed by dinner at 8:15 p.m. On Saturday, Aug. 16, services will be at 9:30 a.m. followed by kiddush at 12:30 p.m. Ciss is a former Hebrew-Christian and founder and director of the Toronto branch of Jews for Judaism. B'nai Moshe Offers Torah Study Class Congregation B'nai Moshe will offer a Torah study session for adults and teens with Rabbi Lee Buckman, head of school of the Jewish Academy of Metropolitan Detroit, on Monday, Aug. 18, 7:30-9 p.m. All are welcome. The shiur is titled "Songs of the Heart: Psalms of Healing." Tuition is $10. Pre-registration is encouraged but not required. There is no charge for high school or college students or for Jewish educators who teach in area congregational schools, day schools, yeshivot or other Jewish educational institutions. Golf Outing Aids Families Congregation Shir Tikvah's second annual golf outing will be Monday, Sept. 22, at Boulder Pointe. Proceeds from the event will go to programs that strengthen families and provide educational opportunities for children through the synagogue's Sam and Jean Frankel Family Education Program. Registration will begin at 11:30 a.m.; tee time is 1 p.m. The format is four-person scramble; men and women are welcome. Cost of the day includes 18 holes of golf with cart, ninth-hole snacks and drinks, dinner, beverages, a sweet table and a live auction. A cash bar will be available for liquor, beer and wine. A native of Milwaukee, Gilan was active in B'nai Kith Youth Organiza- tion, United Synagogue Youth and Camps Ramah and JCC in Wisconsin. Gilan has worked for the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit and has been active in the Jewish community through synagogue involvement, volun- teer service and staffing travel opportu- nities to Israel.
