S ixty-four descendants of Hermann and Henrietta Bahr and Harris and Hannah Goldman attended a family reunion at Bloomer Park in West Bloomfield on July 19. The central focus — beyond the fam- ily connections and the massive quantity of food and photographs — was the genealogical chart hung at the pavilion entrance. All who attended had an opportunity to add to the details of family information stretching back to the late 1700s in places such as Labau, Germany, and the Pale of Settlement in Lithuania and northwestern Russia. The Goldmans came to Detroit as early as 1883. Most of the Bahrs arrived in Michigan in the early 1900s. H.L. Goldman once owned much land along the Detroit River near down- town. He became one of Detroit's early businessmen as owner of Riverside Scrap and Iron, the Crescent Car Company and was a partner in one of Detroit's largest marine engine compa- nies. On the Bahr side, Arthur Baehr start- ed in movie theater management in 1911 and was managing director of the Crystal Theater and then the Senate Theater, both on Michigan Avenue. At the reunion, family members who had not seen each other in years as well as those who weren't even aware of each other's existence, spent the day in ani- mated conversation catching up and sharing family facts and stories. In one wing of the family, four gener- ations gathered: Hazen Goldman, 87, of Berkley, with his daughter Anita Brody of West Bloomfield, his granddaughter Gayle Brody Brown of Howell and his great-grandchildren, Rob Brown, 5, and Alyssa Rose Brown, 4 weeks. It all came to an end much too quick- ly, but all left with an updated e-mail list and home addresses. The expanded family history will be compiled and sent to every Goldman-Bahr descendant. 111 — Jan Brody and Dori Goldman The Baehr (Bahr) family in Detroit in 1928.
