Sen. Joe Lieberman, D-Conn., who
remains strong in national polls but is
still having problems with the liberal
Democratic core, is cranking up his
efforts to woo Jewish voters and con-
tributors.
Last week, the campaign announced
a "special online headquarters for
Jewish-Americans" on its Web site

campaign is holding a chai-crazy fund-
raising event — 18 days to convince
1,800 supporters to contribute at last
$18 by Aug. 18.
The Jewish section of the Lieberman
Web site "contains
resources of interest to
Lieberman's Jewish sup-
porters, including posi-
tion papers, recent news
articles of interest, and
opportunities to get
more involved in the
campaign," according to
the announcement.
Why the burst of Jewish activity?
Political historian Allan J. Lichtman
had a two-word reply: Florida and
money. Lieberman is ratcheting up his
Jewish effort because "the campaign
has not caught fire the way they
hoped, and it has not raised the kind
of money they expected. So they're
coming home to a natural constituen-
cy — Jewish voters— to bump up
support."
"Florida is absolutely critical,"
Lichtman said. "It's one of the states of
opportunity for the Lieberman cam-
paign early on, and the Jewish vote is
a big part of that."
Lichtman said Lieberman's cam-
paign hasn't taken off, but neither has
those of his Democratic rivals.
Despite his problems with the
party's rising left wing, Lieberman is
sticking to the centrist positions that
sold well during the 2000 contest,
when he was Al Gore's vice presiden-
tial running mate.
In a speech to the National Press
Club, he warned against a return to
the "old, big government solutions to
our problems. ❑
