do to cater to this community," Jabbori
even suggested buying the required
non-kosher food items and donating
them to a food bank. "Our customers
would be happy that way, and we
would still make a profit," he said.
Besides, he said, requests for meat
sandwiches have only come from about
1 percent of his customers. 'And it is
not very far for customers who want
meat sandwiches to drive to Dunkin'
Donuts at Nine Mile and Woodward
(in Ferndale) or 12 Mile and Southfield
(in Southfield) to get one."
Jabbori said: "We would be losing 60
to 70 percent of our business if we were
not kosher." Last Saturday night after
Shabbat ended — from 10:30 p.m.
until 1 a.m. — they did higher sales
than in the previous 25-hour Shabbat
period.
Stock depletion also proves the high
kosher food sales. "The racks of foods
that were supposed to be enough to
carry them through Wednesday after-
noon were empty by Tuesday," Rabbi
Krupnik said. "Of 12 types of bagels,
there is only one type left. There are no
croissants and no fried eggs."
The owners and the Vaad are willing
to segregate non-kosher items, such as
sheet cakes and large-size ice cream
packages that are sealed and sold only
for consumption outside the restaurant.
A sign identifies the items that are not
kosher.
"But, on some items, we cannot make
compromises," Rabbi Krupnik said.
_ "We can't have open ham and non-
kosher cheese sandwiches, made by the
same handlers that will serve kosher
items."
Because of the multitude of Baskin
Robbins flavors, the owners were able to
choose the required' amount from with-
in those that are certified as kosher.
King said Allied Domecq will reassess
the kashrut policy this week, with a
decision being made by Friday, Aug. 8,
on whether or not the new Dunkin'
Donuts will remain kosher. Signs on the
restaurant door will update customers of
any change in status. O
