he said.
"The Jews dispersed and each man
returned to his home."
One of the more recent efforts to
rebuild the Temple involved Baron
Meyer Amshel Rothschild. Rabbi Zvi
Hirsh Kalisher (1795-1874), a native of
Germany and Talmudic scholar, was a
devout Zionist who believed Jews them-
selves should bring about the return to
Zion, rather than waiting for the
Messiah. Rabbi Kalisher urged
Rothschild (1744-1812) to pay "a hand-
some sun" to Ibrahim Pasha, King of
Egypt and ruler over all Palestine, for the
Land of Israel. Then, "the many God-
fearing and charitable Jews will travel
there to take up their residence in the
Holy Land under Jewish sovereignty"
and rebuild the Temple. (Rothschild did
not take Rabbi Kalisher up. )

the Temple were those who had been

excommunicated (an extremely rare
occurrence).

Although the Temple was holy, no
one ever suggested that God Himself
resided within its walls. Instead, it was
the place where the shechinah, His
Divine Presence, came to rest and
encourage man to give his heart to
God.

C O The Temple service, conducted by

a priest, began with the offering of a
lamb for sacrifice. This was followed by
sacrifices from individuals. These took
various forms: freewill offerings, thanks
offerings, peace offerings, burnt offer-
ings, meal offerings, guilt offerings and
sin offerings.
While it was practice among most
other religions at the time to charge a
sum to those wishing to make a sacrifice,
Judaism held no such beliefs, and visi-
tors were permitted to make a sacrifice
at no cost.

is the Kotel, or Western Wall. Each of
these massive walls, destroyed and
rebuilt throughout history, contains
original walls from the Second Temple.

€t) Whenever the High Priest was offi-
ciating within the Temple, he wore a
crown made of solid gold. Sources differ
on the exact wording on the crown,
though "holy" and "God" appear in
most versions. Interestingly, the High
Priest did not wear the crown perched
atop his head, but rather over his fore-
head, with the crown reaching from ear
to ear.
