o ... you've decided to have a celebration. Your guest list is
made. You even know the location. Now it's time to create
the gala of your fantasies. Try perusing the enchanting and
inspirational photographs in Renny Reynolds' book, The Art
of the Party (Gibbs Smith, $39.95).
Reynolds launched Design
for Entertaining, his successful
party-design firm, with the
skills he acquired as a land-
scape architect. He has mas-
tered lighting, color, texture
and scale to produce perfect
drama for almost any occa-
sion. Whether you're plan-
ning an intimate brunch or
a grand wedding, there is
always a way to bring ele-
gance and glamour to
the table.
"The best parties
reflect your own
unique style and taste
na
and reveal your gen-
\- I:01101a,
erosity of spirit as a
host," says Reynolds, who treats
every potential party space as a blank canvas primed
to reflect the excitement and joy of each event.
"At a party," writes Reynolds, " people are willing to toss aside
their normal inhibitions, such as fear of color." For a beach party at
Lincoln Center in Manhattan, Reynolds covered poles with 200 red,
yellow, blue, green and white beach balls of various sizes. Beach
umbrellas towered over the hors d'oeuvres tables, and baskets of
food were lined with gingham napkins in red or blue and white.
Party favors, scattered on the tables, included sunglasses, seashells,
Frisbees, lighted plastic ice cream cones and yo-yos.
"At a party,
your senses
should be tickled,
provoked, height-
ened," says
Reynolds.
"There is no
space that cannot
be transformed
into a place of
magic."
Reynolds
invites the reader
to use his ideas as
points of refer-
ence, "then let
your imagination
take over."
