Dr. Gruber:
A Quiet Hero

Congratulations on your well written
and inspiring cover story on my long-
time friend, Dr. Scott Gruber, head of
the transplant team at Harper
University Hospital in Detroit ("New
Lease On Life," July 18, page 48).
I have known Scott for about 20
years and, even before this article,
have recognized him as one of the
unsung heroes of the Jewish commu-
nity. The way in which he balances
his medical work with his commit-
ment to God and family is truly
remarkable.
However, a newspaper feature is not
enough. In an age when too many of
our Jewish youth worship the self-cen-
tered, immoral existences of movie
stars and athletes, it is time that our
local Jewish institutions, particularly
the educational establishments, pay
homage to people like Dr. Gruber.
Too often, our institutions recog-
nize people based mainly on the size
of their bank accounts and donations
and pay little attention to our true
community heroes, like Dr. Scott
Gruber.
The true heroes of our community
and of Klal Yisroel [the Jewish people]
are people like Dr. Gruber. They are
the living embodiment of Torah, avo-
dah [service] and gemilut chasidim
[acts of loving-kindness]. Let us put
them on a pedestal, and invite them
into our educational classrooms, so
that our Jewish youth can look heav-
enward and learn from their ways.
