I is no longer the prim Chanel of tweed suits and brass buttons. The Fall/Winter 2003 Collection, presented by Saks Fifth Avenue and The Detroit Institute of Arts, features a daring Chanel line that marries the '40s with the '80s, and sheer bodices with leather leggings. Patrons and benefactors of the Under the Stars Gala )0(IV were mesmerized by the unexpected aspects of the collec- tion. Micro-minis in satin with tweed or chiffon, and lace with tweed, were paired with more traditional Chanel jackets and bright white boots. Black and white was the prevailing theme, although pink and brown were shown, as were graphic prints and denim. Dressed-up cargo pants, sequined hot pants, metallic jackets, leather with sequins, and dresses with sheer peek-a- boo panels make this a Chanel collection that defies catego- rizing. —Li nda Bachrack 4e) fas 16 • \ I GLST 2003 • tr
