Making the Transition:
Easing the Anxiety of Caregiving Decisions
percent. Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass.,
trailed at 13 percent and former
Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, the cur-
rent darling of political pundits, scored a
skimpy 10.
But when Ms. Clinton was added to
the mix, Lieberman fell to 11 percent,
with the New York freshman leading the
pack with 48 percent.
Another poll pointed to something
Lieberman strategists have believed all
along; his relatively hawkish foreign poli-
cy positions could sell well with the
American public.
The Ipsos/Cook Political Report poll
suggested that a "key group of swing
voters" will be Democrats who are criti-
cal of President Bush's alleged exaggera-
tions about Saddam Hussein's weapons
of mass destruction — but who still
regard the Iraq war as a just-one.
That same group of swing voters, the
report indicates, "strongly approves of
Bush's foreign policy, but strongly disap-
proves of Bush's handling of the econo-
my and other domestic issues."
That, in a nutshell, describes a key tar-
get for the Lieberman campaign.
This week, the veteran senator rein-
forced the point with an aggressive
attack on President Bush's handling of
the war, while chastisina fellow
Democratic contenders b for opposing it.
"By its actions, the Bush administra-
tion threatens to give a bad name to a
just war," Lieberman said. "But by their
words, some in my party are sending out
a message that they don't know a just
war when they see it, and, more broadly,
they're not prepared to use our military
strength to protect our security and the
cause of freedom."
The problem for Lieberman remains
the Democratic primaries, and the most-
ly liberal party activists who will wield
disproportionate influence.
Frost Faces Redistricting
In other political news, a top member of
the Jewish delegation in the House is a
primary target in one of the bloodiest
redistricting battles ever.
Rep. Martin Frost, D-Texas, a 12-term
incumbent and ranking Democrat on
the critical Rules Committee, could be
shifted to a heavily Republican district if
the latest plan by Texas Republicans is
adopted.
Rep. Tom DeLay, R-Texas, the power-
ful House Majority leader, is widely seen
as a major force behind the Texas GOP
plan. The reason isn't hard to discern;
an increase to 22 Republicans in the
state delegation could have a dramatic
impact in securing Republican control
over the House. CI
