York.

expand its focus, according to Myrna
Baron, the center's executive direc-

The center is reissuing the 2001
American Jewish Identity Survey —
which counted 1.7 million American
Jews who said they practice no reli-
gion — and says that half of
American Jewry does not affiliate
with any Jewish institution.
Baron said the center will intro-
duce a new seminar series, train sec-
ular Jewish leaders and launch a Web
site at www.culturaljudaism.org

Jerusalem/JTA — Ariel Sharon told
President Bush that he believes Israel
is in compliance with the call for a
settlement freeze in the road-map
peace plan.
A senior Israeli official told
reporters the Israeli prime minister
had told Bush in their morning meet-
ing that Israel defines a settlement
freeze as no new settlements, no con-
fiscation of land to build settlements,
no settlement expansion outside
existing lines and no funds for settle-
ments. Israel is in compliance with
those four elements, the official said,
an assertion disputed by Palestinians
and dovish Jewish groups.
The official acknowledged "the
U.S. does not see eye to eye with
Israel on the definition of a settle-
ment freeze," but said any change in
Israeli policy on settlements would
come only as part of final status
peace talks. The official also said
many people confuse settlement
expansion with unauthorized settle-
ment outposts in the West Bank, all
of which will eventually be removed.
