Emerging Artists

.

eavings depicting the
Shanghai Ghetto, tiles
that recall World War II
symbols and a silver kiddush cup
to celebrate a bar mitzvah are
among the works being featured in
this year's "Emerging Artists
Exhibition" at the Janice Charach
Epstein Gallery.
The exhibition and sale, running
Aug. 7-Sept. 30 at the Jewish
Community Center in West
Bloomfield, will have a 6:30-8 p.m.
Thursday, Aug. 7, opening-night
reception to introduce the 13
artists represented.
"Amanda Granek's fiber art has
the most Jewish content by one
person in our show," says Sylvia
Nelson, gallery director. "She trav-
eled to [China] and was inspired."
Julie Walsh, about to begin mas-
ter's degree studies in art therapy at
Wayne State University, uses war
symbols as part of her continuing
interest in expressing political views
through clay. Alihough her family
is not Jewish, her grandfather left
Germany before the war because he
opposed Hitler.
"I show battle scenes, fighter
planes and Nazi symbols because I
think it's important that we never
forget," Walsh says.

Alexis Herman, who is starting
Michigan State University in the
fall to study dietetics, designed a
cup with a tree form as the base.
She made it in her jewelry class at
Groves High School for her broth-
er, and it was chosen for a show at
the Birmingham Bloomfield Art
Center.
Asher Dunn, who plans on
becoming an industrial designer, is
displaying prints titled The Three
Amoebas. Although this Jewish
Academy student has made metal
Judaica pieces, he is showing his
abilities with abstractions in anoth-
er discipline.
Other artists and their media
include Robert Aronson, prints;
Susan Fox, weavings; Ilyse Kaplan,
mosaics; Jeremy Levitt, drawings of
furniture designs; Rachel Lugn,
designs in white fabric; Robert
Madvin, glass sculpture; Jennifer
Maiseloff, paintings on wood;
Danielle Nelson, weavings with
photo images; and Stephanie Stein,
silver boxes.
Gallery hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
Mondays-Wednesdays; 10 a.m.-- 7
p.m. Thursdays; and 11 a.m.-4
p.m. Sundays. (248) 432-5448.
