Bronfman: Fence
`Problematic'

New York/JTA — The president of
the World Jewish Congress criticized
Israel's security fence in a letter to
President Bush.
The fence, which Israel says is nec-
essary against terrorist infiltration, is
"complicated and potentially prob-
lematic," Edgar Bronfman wrote to
Bush on Monday. The letter is co-
signed by Lawrence Eagleburger, a
former secretary of state who chairs
the International Commission on
Holocaust-Era Insurance Claims.
The pair urge Bush to continue
demanding Palestinian action against
terrorism and incitement to vio-
lence, but add that Israeli officials
((must be ready to build confidence,
particularly with regard to the diffi-
cult issue of settlement activity,
which at the appropriate time must
be frozen under the terms" of the
road map peace plan.

Giuliani To Victims:
Don't Give Up

New York/JTA — Rudy Giuliani
told Israeli terror victims that peace
in the Middle East will come only
when the Palestinians give up terror-
ism.
"You can't convince people of
negotiation if they're being killed,"
the former New York mayor told a
gathering sponsored by the One
Family Fund at the B'nai Zion
House in New York. "People who
live in freedom will always prevail
over people who live in oppression."
Giuliani said the way the United
States reacted to terrorism in the
past "made the situation for all of
you much worse" in Israel. But
America has been committed to end-
ing international terrorism since the
Sept. 11 attacks, he said.

The survey of 2,002 adults also
found that 8 percent would not vote
for an otherwise qualified Catholic,
while 90 percent would; and 38 per-
cent would not vote for a Muslim,
while 56 percent would.
Two-thirds of respondents said
their religious beliefs play at least an
occasional role in their decision-
making.
The poll, conducted between June
24 and July 8, has a margin of error
of plus or minus 2 percent.

Iraqi Jews
Make Aliyah

Baghdad/JTA — Six of Iraq's 34
remaining Jews made aliyah.
A specially chartered plane depart-
ed Iraq, carrying the six elderly
Iraqis and Rachel Zelon, a vice presi-
dent of the Hebrew Immigrant Aid
Society, which is leading the opera-
tion with the Jewish Agency for
Israel.
Zelon traveled to Baghdad earlier
this summer to assess the communi-
ty's situation in person.
"This is clearly a community at
great risk given the increasing ten-
sions within Iraq, and the increase in
open anti-Semitism," she said.

Anti-Semitic
Web Site Shut

New York/JTA — An anti-Semitic
Web site that posed as a "Who's
Who for Jews" was taken down.
Hoozajew.org was "little more
than a cyber-den for anti-Semites,"
the Anti-Defamation League said
last week after the site was disabled.
The site included lists of Jews in
different professions, with each sec-
tion concluding that Jews are over-
represented in that field.
