Dr. Saper discovered drug regimens
that weren't used in combinations
before, such as tricylics and beta block-
ers together for headache. He discovered
and was the first to use intravenous
Benadryl for headaches.
Born and raised in Joliet, Ill., Dr.
Saper, who was brought up in a
Conservative Jewish home, set his goals
by the time he was in ninth grade.
When he began his undergraduate
work, he knew he wanted to be a neu-
rologist. "I was intrigued by the chem-
istry of behavior and the brain's relation-
ship to personality," says Dr. Saper.
Diovorced, he has two daughters and
a son, Lisa, 22, Justin, 21, and Lauren,
19. He is a member of Beth Israel
Synagogue in Ann Arbor.
Dr. Saper is most proud of the num-
ber of patients that he has been able to
help. "I get a number of letters of grati-
tude and it means a lot," says Dr. Saper.
"I am also proud of the fact that we
have influenced the quality of care and
treatment modalities that we have devel-

oped. We have trained a lot of doctors
who have gone off to other centers in
the country."
Dr. Saper believes future medications
will prevent migraine. "When people
who are prone to migraines are exposed
to a trigger, their brain overreacts and
what follows is an avalanche of physio-
logical events," he says. "New treat-
ments are going to block the cascade
from happening."
Dr. Saper shows no signs of slowing
down. He is working with U.S. Rep.
Mike Rodgers, R-Brighton, on national
pain legislation.
Rodgers, a member of the House
Energy and Commerce Committee,
heard about Dr. Saper's work as former
national chair for the Pain/Care
Coalition. They are supporting greater
funding for pain and headache research
at the National Institutes of Health,
more training for doctors in headache
and pain, and grants for the develop-
ment of education and treatment cen-
ters throughout the U.S. ❑
