Watching a television movie last sum-
mer about a family that turned to a leg-
islative remedy for a tragedy they suf-
fered, Silver says, 'A light bulb went on.
The supplement reached more than a
million people, she says. But more than
a 100 million women still needed to be
reached on an ongoing basis. So Silver
sat down at her kitchen table that day
and drafted the testimony she would
give to explain the need for a law by
Congress.
One letter, several phone calls and e-
mails later to Rep. Levin, who represent-
ed the district where her sister once
lived, Silver got a call from his office.
The congressman decided to make a bill
that would educate people to the early
signs of gynecologic cancer one of his
legislative priorities. He called the bill
Johanna's Law: the Gynecologic Cancer
Education and Awareness Act.
