Sheryl with mother, Anne Gonte Silver of Bloomfield Hills, reminiscing over fizmily
photographs.

oration wasn't saving lives because
women weren't learning about it.
"Ovarian cancer kills 14,000 women
in the U.S. every year, more than all
other gynecologic cancers, that includes
uterine and cervical cancers, combined,"
Silver says. "We've got to do better."

Saving Others

In August 2002, Johanna, 58, lost her
battle with cancer. Her daughter Wendy
married the next year and had a baby
girl, Jillian, named for Johanna. Already
frail, Silver's and Gordon's father, Dr. I.
Walter Silver, died earlier this year.
"When the unthinkable happened to
my sister, I was devastated," says Silver.
"I always made seemingly impossible
deadlines in my career and thought we'd
be able to find something, a magic bul-
let, a cure in time."
It took several months until the fol-
lowing spring, when Silver's grief turned
a corner.
"I had to do something," she says. "I
had to find a way to stop this suffering.
I couldn't save my sister, but I could save
other people. I have a responsibility
because of my access to people in the
media."

Silver says it was beshert (meant to be)
that the part of the newspaper she free-
lanced for was the supplement depart-
ment.
"One way to devote pages to a subject
is to sponsor the page," she says.
Here, in an advertising supplement,
she realized that she could reach mil-
lions of people with in-depth informa-
tion on gynecologic cancer.
"I wanted daughters and friends and
mothers to be warned about this disease
— and saved," Silver says.
She got the support of the
Gynecologic Cancer Foundation. The
foundation got an educational grant
from Aventis Pharmaceuticals to spon-
sor the supplement.
The four-page educational supple-
ment first came out May 7, 2002, in the
Washington Post, and an updated version
June 22, 2003, in the New York Times.
For this achievement, Silver was
awarded the Public Service Award by
the Gynecologic Cancer Foundation.
Former winners include Barbara Walters
and Fran Drescher.
But Silver had more work to do. The
two supplements were only the begin-
ning.
