Jacob Lascu is probably best known for
his many years as coordinator/choreogra-
pher of the annual holiday ballet
"The Nutcracken" for Dance Detroit
with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.

Another of Lascu's students is Richard
Orbach, now of Israel. He danced with
the Alvin Ailey and Paul Taylor dance
companies, toured in the international
company of A Chorus Line and worked
with Topol in Fiddler on the Roof. He's
danced with two of Israel's top dance
companies: Batsheva and Bat Dor.
His mother, Jewish Ensemble
Theatre Artistic Director Evelyn
Orbach, said her son still is learning
from Lascu. She said, "It's a mark of
respect that a professional would come
back and take a class with him."
For six years, Lascu helped ice dancer
Eve Chalom, now with the New York
Ice Dance Theater, and her partner
Matthew Gates develop their upper
body moves and practice lifts on solid
ground for competitions, said her moth-
er, Wayne State University Professor
Susan Chalom. The duo placed second
in 1997 and 1999 as members of the
U.S. World Figure Skating Team.
Lascu, said Professor Chalom, "was
able to get them to do things they did-
n't know they were capable of doing"
and shared "all those secrets a ballet
dancer has." 111

Iacob Lascu currently teaches part
time at Oakland University. He
will present a ballet workshop Aug.
18-22 for the Eisenhower Dance
Ensemble, Center for Dance, 1541
